I Hate *%$# Winter!
Current temp at 6:50pm here: -12 °F That MINUS 12..... that's -24 °C for our metric friends.
My forecast:
Then the weather service warnings:
My forecast:
-28 to -31 °CColder. Clear in the evening then becoming partly cloudy. Lows 20 below to 25 below zero. Northwest winds 10 mph shifting to the east after midnight.
Then the weather service warnings:
... Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until 3 PM CST this afternoon...
... Wind Chill Advisory in effect until 9 am CST Friday...
The National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen has issued a Wind Chill Advisory... which is in effect until 9 am CST Friday. The Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect until 3 PM CST this afternoon.
* Timing... this afternoon through Friday morning.
* Wind chill values... 25 below to 35 below... possibly nearing 40 below for a short period of time near daybreak in west central Minnesota. (-31 to -37 °C)
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you must venture outdoors... make sure you wear a hat and gloves.

It's about 50 degrees warmer here. Right now we're in the mid-40's, or as the locals call it, cold.TexasBlue wrote:Current temp at 6:50pm here: -12 °F That MINUS 12..... that's -24 °C for our metric friends.
Note: I'm not a local. I'm from New Mexico. I've seen winter temperatures below zero.

I feel yer pain buddy. It's been snowing all day here and when that happens the road crews can't keep the streets cleared. I almost bought the farm on the way home from work today... there wasn't a single cleared street and all trace of lane markers were buried under the snow.
It's going to get down in the low single digits here, and below zero with the wind chill.

It sucks. But the trade-off is kickass spring, summer and fall here.

Tonight's wind chill: Frostbite possible in a matter of minutes
Minneapolis Star-Tribune
January 20, 2011
MINNEAPOLIS - Dangerously cold temperatures are settling over Minnesota with wind chill readings that can cause frostbite to exposed skin in a matter of minutes.
Forecasters say daytime temperatures may not make it above zero in northern Minnesota. Friday morning lows could drop to minus-30 and colder from the Iron Range north.
In International Falls, for example, the overnight low is expected to be around minus-36. Brainerd may see minus-27 and Duluth minus-25. (I'm an hour from Brainerd for those trying to find me)
In the Twin Cities, the low from Thursday night into Friday morning will be around minus-15, with minus-20 readings possible in suburban areas.
The arctic air will be escorted by by winds that could produce wind chills as low as minus-30 in the Twin Cities area and minus-50 up north.
In the Twin Cities, homeless shelters are reporting an increase in the number of people looking for warmth and a hot meal. The Salvation Army's Harbor Light in downtown Minneapolis can accommodate as many as 500 people each night. Director Dominick Bouza says the number of people needing help is up about 15 percent.
The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for much of Minnesota through Friday.
Through Wednesday afternoon, the Twin Cities had seen only five days with subzero readings this winter. There are normally more than 20 by the end of January.
Late January and early February have produced some of the Twin Cities' and Minnesota's most notable cold weather records. The Twin Cities' all-time lowest reading was minus 34 on Jan. 22, 1936, and Jan. 19, 1970.
The good news in all of this: Tonight's cold snap will only be a one-night stand, as temperatures will moderate and winds will die down through the weekend. Friday temperatures for the Twin Cities are expected to waver either side of zero, then rise into the teens and low 20s next week.

Dangerously cold temperatures across Minnesota
Minneapolis Star-Tribune
January 21, 2011
Dangerously cold temperatures settled in over Minnesota overnight, with morning readings of 30 below zero or colder common across northern part of the state. Minneapolis-St. Paul reported a low of -16.
In Minnesota's frozen north, International Falls reported a early-morning low of 46 degrees below zero, a record low for this date even for them. Other readings of 30 below or colder were common across northern Minnesota: Park Rapids reported -40, Bemidji, Roseau and Warroad -35, Brainerd -33 and Hibbing -32. St. Cloud reported a low of -29, Duluth -24, Rochester -20.
A homeless woman's death in Minneapolis was initially blamed on the cold weather, but later reports cast doubt on the cause.
The wind has stayed away for the most part, but forecasters say daytime temperatures may not make it above zero in northern Minnesota.

It's so cold that a local flasher was caught describing himself to women.
It's so cold that when I went to take out the garbage, it didn't want to go.
It's so cold that I saw a Democrat with his hands in his own pockets.

It's so cold that my cash card won't work in the ATM. Apparently, my funds have been frozen.
It so cold that I had to stop eating with metal cutlery. Some people walked around for days with spoons or forks stuck to their tongues!
It's so cold that hitchhikers were holding up pictures of thumbs!
It's so cold that when I dialed 911, a recorded message said to phone back in the spring!
It's so cold that the squirrels were throwing themselves at an electric fence!
It's so cold that the dogs were wearing cats!
It's so cold that Starbucks was serving coffee on a stick!
It's so cold that kids stopped worrying about acne. The new problem? Goosebumps!
It's so cold that the dogs had to put jumper cables on the rabbits just to get them running!
It's so cold that I pulled everything out of the freezer and huddled inside it to warm up!

Re: I Hate *%$# Winter!
Living one's life in the deep south, heat becomes as much a problem as the deep freeze further north. My better half comes from NE Ohio. She's now a devout sun worshiper and lives for days when even the pine ticks drop dead from the heat.
On the flipside, I love cold, gray, blustery days. Fall is my favorite and winter comes in second.
Of course, winter here ain't like winter in Ohio or Minnesota. We average one snow/ice event per year and it's generally melted and gone within 72 hours, lol.

Sounds like Texas when I was there. Now we get the occasional blast of heat here like they get an occasional blast of cold in the south.

I lived in Southern California for nearly 35 years. I moved there while in the Army and stayed for the weather.
Now I'm back home in Southwest Ohio and I can officially say... WINTER SUCKS!!!
On the flip side, I love the weeks of overcast skies, the rain and thunderstorms... I really missed thunderstorms. Those are my favorite days here, no sun for days on end and thunderstorms that rattle the windows and walls. It makes it worth suffering through the winter months.

Here we go again!!!
Had snow accumulations last night that melted this morning.
But it's cold outside....
We're not quite MN, but I was born and raised in Iowa...those mountain winds just gain steam as they tear across the plains!!!

34° right now and the temps are going lower as snow comes along tonight. Only about an inch or so.... which is fine by me.

Giving you shit. I remember winter over there back in 1982 and 83. I was 30 minutes north of Bremen... where the wind was atrocious.
