Re: Firefox Extensions
Textarea Cache
This extension is very useful when posting (here or wherever). I can't think of the numerous times i was replying to a post on here and something happened to where Firefox somehow 'clicked' back to the previous page. Of course, when one clicks the forward button, the posting field comes back... blank. Pissed me off so may times. One time i was replying to Bubblebliss quote by quote and had spent a better part of 30 minutes doing so only to have the post lost due to FF's quirk.
So, i discovered this extension. It cache's each and everything one makes in any form filed. It resides in FF's bottom toolbar. One can clear the cache at any time to make room for other stuff. But it'll keep track (cache) everything one by one.

Re: Firefox Extensions
I found this little gem the other day and it works. Anybody running Firefox needs this. I've had to play around with it a bit to figure things out but it's fairly easy. The reason i know it works is that there's an option on it to Block my searching from Google tracking automatically using GoogleSharing in the preferences tab (surf anonymously). I checked it and immediately i was logged out of Google (i have an account). Unchecked brought it back.

Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-Out (TACO)
* Opt-out of target advertising
* See privacy information as you browse
* Block web trackers and web bugs
* Control browser, DOM and Flash cookies
Block Targeted Advertising
TACO with Abine prevents over 100 different online advertising networks (including Google, Microsoft and Yahoo) from displaying highly targeted advertisements using the detailed information on your web surfing habits. TACO disables most behavioral advertising by setting 100+ permanent, generic, non personally identifiable "opt-out" cookies directly into the browser.
Unlike other opt-out solutions, this tool will make the opt out cookies completely persistent. That is, clearing the browser's cookies will delete all other installed cookies, except these.
See & Control Online Tracking
You can now see how you are being tracked at every website. Privacy alerts show you what trackers are active, blocks many tracking techniques such and network scripts, widgets and other web bugs, provide one-stop control over all browser and flash cookies (LSOs) and informs you about data breaches at the sites you visit.
Reclaim your online privacy
There are additional beta privacy features such as disposable email generation that are off by default. If you choose, you can also add several other pro-privacy protection technologies, enabling you to reclaim your privacy and control your life online. See www.getabine.com/more/privacyapps.php.
User-Centric Privacy
TACO and Abine is a privacy add-on for users. We've done all we can to provide effective privacy tools, and we're working to provide a complete set of privacy features with no compromises. We don't track, monitor, or collect information on users. Read what we think of privacy and the goals of our company.
Why you need a privacy solution
Most advertising networks will continue to collect detailed information about your web browsing habits, which in some cases is retained indefinitely. Even if you use the opt-out feature to opt-out of behavioral advertising, many companies will still attempt to insert other unique, identifiable cookies into your browser in order to track your browsing across multiple sessions.
If you value your privacy, and want to do something to protect yourself from the identifiable cookies which advertising networks will try to insert into your browser, you should use TACO to either block third party cookies and or to delete all cookies at the end of each browsing session, something you can now do on a site by site basis for both first and third party cookies, and covering browser, DOM and flash cookies.
In addition, many companies use web bugs and trackers to dynamically track your browsing behavior across multiple websites. TACO gives you full control visibility over what trackers are present at a site and full control over blocking trackers globally or on a site-by-site basis.

Adblock Plus
Adblock Plus allows you to regain control of the internet and view the web the way you want to. The add-on is supported by over forty filter subscriptions in dozens of languages which automatically configure it for purposes ranging from removing online advertising to blocking all known malware domains. Adblock Plus also allows you to customize your filters with the assistance of a variety of useful features, including a context option for images, a block tab for Flash and Java objects, and a list of blockable items to remove scripts and stylesheets.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/1865/
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It works like a charm. Never see another ad again except in some cases.

Re: Firefox Extensions
Flashblock
Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla, Firefox, and Netscape browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading. It then leaves placeholders on the webpage that allow you to click to download and then view the Flash content.
Flashblock currently blocks the following content types:
* Macromedia Flash
* Macromedia Shockwave
* Macromedia Authorware

Do you think that pessimistic view is justified? Is flash content a known threat?

Re: Firefox Extensions
I've never had a problem with security issues in Flash but I have been using Adblock Plus for a couple of years now. I strongly recommend it, esp for ad heavy websites.

Same here. Plus, it keeps videos from loading right away. If i'm cruising thru YouTube looking for stuff, i can open 2 or more tabs and those vids don't play till i click the placeholder icon in the vid screen. That's what i really like about it.

Re: Firefox Extensions
I tried to install AdBlockPlus and got this error message:

because: Signing could not be verified.

Usually that's a problem with their servers. I put it on my mom's Mac a few weeks ago and got that same thing. I tried it again about 30 minutes later and it worked.
Try it here.

Re: Firefox Extensions
Ok, try this then...
1. Save the plugin under your desktop as xpi file (right-click download and Save As)
2. Change the extension by renaming the file, from .xpi to .zip
3. Extract the zip file
4. Open the extracted folder
5. Find "install.rdf file" & open it with Notepad
6. Find <em:maxversion> , and change it's value to be 3.6
7. Save the file
8. Go back and zip the folder again
9. Change the extension of the zipped file to .xpi again
10. Now install the plugin you just modified

Re: Firefox Extensions
That didn't work. I think I may need to upgrade my FireFox. I am currently running 3.0.10, and I noticed on the mozilla site that this version of AdBlock works with Firefox 3.0.12 - 4.0b8pre.
Think that might be it?

Holy browsers, Batman! That's old! I'm running FF 3.6.10.... yeah, go to the Help tab at the top, click the drop down and Check for Updates. It'll take around a minute or two. You'll have to do a browser restart. Then i bet AdBlock will install for you.

Re: Firefox Extensions
Yeah, I've been offline a while, so I've not had a chance to do any updating. Guess I should get to that.

Well, I updated to 3.6.10, and the AdBlockPlus upgrade went off without a hitch... guess that was it...

Good deal. Now, there should be an icon up on your tool bar (on the top) somewhere. Click it and you should get a drop down menu. Click Preferences. A new window should open. Click the Filter tab. Click Add Filter Subscription. There should be at least one or more options. Pick any one of them or all of them. It will give you a whole bunch of blacklisted ad sites. Then you're good to go.
Or you can go here http://easylist.adblockplus.org/ and here http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions

Re: Firefox Extensions
Must Haves: Flashblock, Tree Tabs, KDE skins, GreaseMonkey, Firebug, View Source Chart, JSON inspector, Tor, Smart Reload/Stop.
Used to have: Adblock (if everyone use this, then most of the internet would cease to exist - I don't know if I could justify using it), NoScript (not sure if security is worth the hassle and overly frequent updates) and the old FasterFox for Firefox 2 (web admins used to block firefox users for using it).

Just for Matt.......
Wordpress Toolbar
Wordpress Toolbar is a simple tool that provides you an easy to use toolbar for administration of your Wordpress Blog.
Using jQuery, it appends the default WordPress admin menu to whatever page you’re currently on and styles it with CSS, fixing it to the top right corner. Assuming you’re on a site that’s running WordPress (and it’s installed in the domain’s root), you now have instant access to the entire administrative back end (sans any pages from custom plugins, etc) from the front end.
