I always felt that the 12 disciples--although they may have been real people--are in fact a summary of every person. We all have traits of each disciple

Peter--the bold, outgoing, fearless one
Thomas--the doubter
Judas--the sneaky one
John--the popular one that doesn't go overboard on issues
and so on...
