Re: What's your OS?
I have a desktop with XP on, haven't used it in a few months as I have nowhere to put it. On the laptop I use on a day to day basis I have Vista. Probably wouldn't cope with Win7 at the mo.
Re: What's your OS?
From what i've heard, switching to 7 would be painless for you. It's what Vista was supposed to be from what i've read.
I'll stay on XP till the Atlantic swallows me up.

It sucks.
Why? You want XP again?

Right now: None of the above, should there be an "other" box, who uses 98/ME anymore? There are OSes that aren't Windows or OSX, dontchakno?

Say what you want about Windows 1, but tiling windows managers were awesome, kids today are spoilt with screen space they use in the least efficient way possible. Mind you, Windows 7 has a pretty decent windows management system.
Like I said, my current OS right now isn't Windows.

Re: What's your OS?
I would envy you if you were to say "Windows 3.1" but I bet even the most diehard Win3.1 supporters could never make it work with today's software.
Re: What's your OS?
I just tried Windows 7 for the first time (mum's new PC) - nifty. Like the postitnotes - have a feeling I may use them once then forget about them entirely. Spent the first hour taking all the pre-installed crap off that she isn't going to use - thank you Dell.

Did you mean hardware? If so, you could actually with Virtual Box. Same with DOS. Use it play some old games that only run in XP whilst doing real work on the same computer.
If you meant run modern day browsers and the like on Windows 3.1 - oh no, you would of course be correct

Re: What's your OS?
Now I want to play, 'guess Merk's OS'. Is it any of the following:
AmigaOS
Haiku
ReactOS
Syllable
SkyOS
MorphOS
AROS
MenuetOS
DexOS
Visopsys
I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and guess it isn't Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

Google PC Decrapifier. That software is made to eradicate that stuff in one swoop.

I was going to admonish you for being a complete saddo, but I just finished watching all three seasons of the lame Dungeon and Dragons kid's TV show; glass houses and rocks and all that.
AmigaOS
No. But I have fond memories of this one.
Haiku
No. Have used it though, really light but not very useful for anything yet. Never heard of the OS it was based off.
ReactOS
If you meant ReactOS after the complete re-write using Wine libraries, no. If you meant the original one before it, still no.
Syllable
Nope, never heard of this one.
SkyOS
What? These are some really obscure ones you must have found.
MorphOS
Had to look this one up.
AROS
Like before I had to look this one up. Looks like another "Amiga" clone.
MenuetOS
A-HA! I have tried this one out and very interested in the goals the developers set for this one. But alas, not my OS of choice.
DexOS
Another complete mystery to me.
Visopsys
Probably the most obscure one you manage to find. Even the internet couldn't find enough meat on this.

Funnily enough, it has most in common with the Apple OS of all the ones that you've mentioned. I'm rather surprised you decided to go for the loony operating systems first, among hobbyists this one is actually very well known and has actually been used in PRODUCTIVE work. In fact I'll offer one clue: it's mascot was designed by the man who would go on to direct Toy Story (another link with Apple as a matter of fact).

Re: What's your OS?
Hmm...director of Toy Story being John Lasseter and therefore your OS of choice is...BSD!
Dungeons and Dragons? Aren't you too young to be an 80s child? Don't think I've ever seen all of them, did they ever get home?
My dvd collection contains episodes of Danger Mouse, so I'm hardly in a position to judge.

No, I meant making modern games and software to run on Win 3.1. It was simply but it worked properly.merkwurdigliebe wrote:The_Amber_Spyglass wrote:I would envy you if you were to say "Windows 3.1" but I bet even the most diehard Win3.1 supporters could never make it work with today's software.

I hate to be a total arse, but you aren't quite there BSD is a family of unix(y) OSes, John Lasseter designed Beastie for one particular variant of BSD, that being FreeBSD. I guess I should have been more consistent and admonished Tex for calling "Linux" an operating system, when everyone knows that "Linux" is strictly speaking just the kernel, and everything else around it (desktop, shell, userland) makes it a usable "operating system".

Indeed I was but I do have a distinct memory of the reruns they used to play on Cartoon Network. Actually I was expecting to find the episode where they do return home eventually, but either my "complete" collection wasn't so complete or it never existed. I did ask my mates from whom I borrowed it from, and they've told me that if there ever was an episode where the kids return - it was never aired.
