British History Online - pre 1800 maps
I'm a bit of a geek for this sort of thing, I'm utterly fascinated by historic maps and this website is a valuable resource. I wish I'd known about it before I started my dissertation but still, on this site maps dating to pre-1800 have been made available to the general public. Previously, you would have had to visit local records offices for this information and photocopy pages and pages of stuff.

Check out this fascinating 1690 map of London. James II had just been deposed and William and Mary's "Glorious Revolution" had taken place, triggering constitutional reform of the monarchy... and this was our nation's capital.

And this survey map following the great fire of 1666.

I know exactly what you mean. My girlfriend and I went to Germany this summer and we went to the Neuschwanstein Castle. In the gift shop there, they had a map of all the Royal families of Bavaria, where they were located, what their crests looked like, etc.
It was interesting.
It was interesting.

There are some fascinating historic maps at the University of Texas

I haven't been able to find any regional/town/city maps for Germany though.

See I love those maps. It's fun to look and say "Oh, those could be my ancestors right there".
