He plays a Drill Instructor in Full Metal Jacket. He does it well since he actually was one in his earlier days. This is hilarious but so true. This is the way they actually are except these days they can't touch you. Of course, the movie takes place during the Vietnam era. a far cry from his funny portrayal in the Geico commercial.

Tells the Pentagon Channel how he landed the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the movie Full Metal Jacket.

Re: Actor R. Lee Ermey
Yeah I know who he is. Pretty much most of his roles have played off of his Full Metal Jacket role.
Re: Actor R. Lee Ermey
He's pretty good. He reminds me of my drill instructor. But mine was a young guy (at the time) of 24.... and a pure undulated asshole.
What are DI's like for the UK Army basic training recruits?

Re: Actor R. Lee Ermey
No idea. Where I work doesn't deal with raw recruits, it is a training camp for those already serving, cadets, uotcs and officer training exercises.
Re: Actor R. Lee Ermey
Oh, ok. I'm sure yours are pretty hard on the recruits. Ours are but political correctness has damped some of what our DI's can do (or even say) to new recruits. Don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, ya know.

Re: Actor R. Lee Ermey
Btw, Lou Gosset also did a good job portraying a drill instructor in An Officer and A Gentleman. Ermey is an ex-DI so that made his role more believable.
