Doom 3
Yeah, I know I'm a little bit late with this one but I finally have a PC powerful enough to play it at a decent resolution.
Now I have already completed Dead Space, I'm sure it will feel incredibly tame in comparison. It is incredibly atmospheric though.

Re: Doom 3
Lol, I had a go at Doom 3 about three years ago.
Excellent graphics and very nightmarish in ID's trademark style, but the one bizarre gameplay quirk, as I remember is that you can't hold a flashlight and a weapon at the same time.
So, because the game is so dark, you spend half your time peering around with the flashlight, and then rapidly trying to switch to your weapon when you see something demonic running towards you, haha.

Re: Doom 3
Out of interest, what are the specs required for L4D? Doom 3 is slightly jerky but nothing I can't handle. I'll do a comparison to see if I could run it.
Re: Doom 3
I'm not sure. The system I play L4D2 on is
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.33 Ghz
RAM: 3.5 GB
Graphics: ATI Radeon X1950 512MB
That runs it pretty much perfectly. There is sometimes a teeny bit of choppiness when there's a ton of zombies and explosions on screen - and unless you've played it I can't explain to you how many zombies come at once in that game; like dozens and dozens.
What system are you running? Doom 3 is actually quite a resource hog, even though its 6-7 years old. When it was released in 2004 only high-end systems could hope to run it.

A new laptop I got this week.

3gb RAM, 2.13ghz proc. Can't tell video graphics but it struggles with the battle sequences on Medieval II Total War but no problems so far with D3.

Nice Laptop!
http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-computers/everyday/NP-RV510-A0AUK/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=specification
Unfortunately it doesn't have a standalone GPU but as far as integrated graphics go, the Intel GMA 4500 chipset isn't too shabby.
You should be able to run L4D on playable settings, but you'll probably need to make quite a few compromises to graphics settings and frame-rate. If you search on Youtube there are a lot of videos of people running games on the 4500, including L4D. Some are pretty good. Because it's quite a common laptop iGPU a lot of people have tried to push it as far as it will go!

Give it a few years and I will probably get a decent desktop. Only using laptops at the moment because we're stuck for space where we're currently living and have nowhere to put a desktop.

Laptops are pretty awesome these days, to be honest. There used to be a much larger disparity between laptops and desktops, but not anymore.
A year ago my brother bought a 'gaming' laptop with dedicated graphics and bigger cooling fans and so on. It was significantly more expensive but he prefers it to a desktop now. Whereas he used to play games locked away in his bedroom he now plays in his living room while chatting to his girlfriend and watching TV, so it sort of adds a sociable element to it that wasn't there before, haha.

Re: Doom 3
lol, yes. I remember back when they said gaming was created a nation of introverts with no social skills. Now it seems a night-in play games is the ultimate night-out-staying-in. Internet gaming, co-ops and the family entertainment approach in the Wii has done that.
Playing Medieval II most of yesterday made me realise though that as much as I enjoy Resident Evil, Bioshock, Dead Space, Arkham Asylum et al on the xbox, I'm still a strat-player at heart.

Re: Doom 3
Incidentally Matt have you ever played Half Life 2?
You'd love the Big Brother, 1984 cyberpunk overtones and it is by all accounts one of the finest games ever produced. If you can run Doom 3 you should have no problems with HL2.
Speaking of strategy games, the sequel to Shogun was finally released last week! I'm very tempted...

Re: Doom 3
I'm not sure. I played a few minutes of a Half Life game on my brother's XBox 360 a couple of years ago. It might have been HL2 and I did like it. I'll probably get it eventually, once I've grown bored with all the games I currently have.
As for Shogun II, looks interesting but I'll have to have a machine powerful enough to play Empires or Napoleon first. That's a loooong way off.
I wonder where Total War will go next? I wouldn't be surprised if they went with the English Civil War or American Civil War. (Obviously, they will do Rome II first).

Living in a closet?

Re: Doom 3
No, just nowhere to put a decent desktop or a desk to put it on. Most of our wedding presents are still in boxes at my mum's house.
