Report: Jimmy Carter sent condolences to N. Korea after dictator’s death

Will Rahn
DailyCaller
Dec. 21, 2011

North Korea’s state-run news agency is reporting that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter expressed his condolences following the death of brutal dictator Kim Jong Il.

“In the message Jimmy Carter extended condolences to Kim Jong Un and the Korean people over the demise of leader Kim Jong Il,” read a report on the Korean Central News Agency’s website flagged by Business Insider’s Zeke Miller.

“He wished Kim Jong Un every success as he assumes his new responsibility of leadership, looking forward to another visit to [North Korea] in the future,” it continued.

Needless to say, the Korean Central News Agency is not the most reliably accurate news outfit on the face of the earth, but The Washington Times reports that Carter hasn’t yet denied the report. And given some of his eccentric policy comments over the past several years, Carter’s condolences to Pyongyang might not come as much of a surprise.

Carter has visited North Korea twice since 1994. After an attack on a South Korean island last year, Carter said it was “designed to remind the world that they deserve respect in negotiations that will shape their future.”

Did President Carter Send Condolences to North Korea?

Elliott Abrams
CFR.org
Wednesday, December 21, 2011

According to the North Korean news agency, former President Jimmy Carter has sent condolences on the death of Kim Jong-Il.

Here is the statement the North Koreans issued:

Pyongyang, December 21 (KCNA) — Kim Jong Un, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea, received a message of condolences from Jimmy Carter, ex-president of the U.S. on Dec. 19.

In the message Jimmy Carter extended condolences to Kim Jong Un and the Korean people over the demise of leader Kim Jong Il.

He wished Kim Jong Un every success as he assumes his new responsibility of leadership, looking forward to another visit to the DPRK in the future.

Let us hope for a quick denial from President Carter’s office. To express condolences to the people of North Korea over the death of Kim is truly like expressing condolences to the people of Iraq over the death of Saddam Hussein, to Italians over Mussolini, to Libyans over Gadhafi…there are many examples. It may seem impossible, and perhaps Carter sent something but he is being misquoted. And yet…the idea seems plausible as does the notion that Carter would seek to get back there soon and see the new guy.

In May The New York Times reported that there were 200,000 people in North Korean prison camps. One could fill a page just listing the reports on the monstrous nature of the Kim regime–torture, murder, mass executions, abductions, starvation…it does not end. All of which makes it unseemly for the former leader of a great democracy, a man who considers himself a champion of human rights, to express sadness at the passing of the ruling monster. And we must hope he wasn’t wishing the 28-year-old who just inherited power (or a share of power; we’ll see) “every success” either. Success at what? Maintaining the dictatorship in the family? Keeping those prisons full? Was it impossible to say we all hope North Korea moves toward respect for human rights?

Let’s hope Carter corrects the record. Let’s hope it actually needs correction.

Jimmy Carter sent condolences to the family of someone who died.
Why? Because he is a classy guy.
And because he understands that even Attila the Hun's children mourned his death.
(assuming he had any children)
Jimmy understands that the dead can do us no harm.
And expressing sympathy to the living can also do us no harm.

Maybe Truman should've sent Germany condolences when Hitler died.

So far, this report is all unconfirmed anyway.

UN assembly holds "minute" of silence for Kim Jong-il

Louis Charbonneau
Reuters
December 22, 2011

The U.N. General Assembly granted a request from North Korea and held a few moments of silence on Thursday for Kim Jong-il, the country's former leader who died on Saturday, though Western delegations boycotted it.

Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, president of the 193-nation assembly, called for a "minute of silence" before the start of a routine meeting at 3:00 p.m. EST (2000 GMT) in the half-empty U.N. General Assembly hall.

"It is my sad duty to pay tribute to the memory of the late Kim Jong-il, Secretary-General of the Workers Party of Korea, Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, who passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17," he said.

The minute of silence lasted for 25 seconds before Nasser proceeded with the scheduled meeting. The United States, European Union member states and Japan were among the countries that boycotted the tribute to Kim Jong-il.

North Korea's U.N. mission made a similar request to the Security Council, but Western diplomats said it was rejected.

"We didn't think it would be appropriate," a diplomat told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Several Western diplomats said Pyongyang's request for Kim to be honored was highly unusual. They voiced surprise that Nassir had granted it and added that their delegations would most likely boycott the moment of silence in the assembly.

Speaking at a news conference, Nasser cited "protocol" as the reason for agreeing to the request from North Korea, a full U.N. member. One diplomat said the reason for granting the request was probably because Kim was an acting head of state.

Pyongyang is under Security Council sanctions due to Kim Jong-il's nuclear weapons program, which Western officials say ate up huge sums of money that could have been used to help feed North Korea's starving population.

An official at the Czech Republic's U.N. mission said the Czechs did not request a similar moment of silence for Vaclav Havel, the playwright-turned-dissident who died on Sunday.

The former Czech president was the leader of Czechoslovakia's 1989 "Velvet Revolution," in which he oversaw the peaceful transition from communism to democracy.

Several Western diplomats say Pyongyang's request for Kim to be honored was highly unsual. They voiced surprise that Nassir had granted it...

Why on earth would they be surprised by this?

The UN is nothing more than a far-left organ for dictators, tyrants and totalitarian theocrats!

That they would grant such an offensive request just further proves this!

I see. And how about the millions of North Koreans who were murdered or starved to death at the hands of this despicable tyrant?

I'll bet they had families too, where those families weren't wiped out enmasse.

Did Carter deign to send condolances to them? Does he even acknowledge their deaths?

I consider Dick Cheney to be a war criminal; and just possibly the most evil human being on this planet.
But if he died, and I ran into his wife or children, I would offer them my condolences for THEIR loss.
After they were out of sight, I would go back to dancing in the street.
But I would respect THEIR FEELINGS enough to not do that in front of them.

It would cost me nothing to show them that respect.

But why am I wasting my time trying to explain it to you people?
This forum is a waste of my time.
See ya.

Ya see, folks? This is what hardcore leftists do. They run. They can't stand the debate, so they run.

I gave Cookie a trial run at being a mod. But after having to point out to her (numerous times) things that she can't do as a mod (and being ignored), I demoted her. What did she do? She ran away. I was told that I didn't allow "opposing" points of view which, of course, is the biggest load of horseshit I ever heard. One just can't sit here and blabber on half-truths without backing things up.

I welcome all opinions in here. It just can't be flame-based and silly bullshit. Things have to be kept real. I refuse to let this place turn into a garbage-filled cesspool. On other boards, I've seen the hatred exhibited by many liberals against those that hold differing viewpoints. I witnessed them trying to shut down debate and demand tolerance while many of them are intolerant. Being liberal used to mean being open minded. Now it means being open minded only about liberal ideas.

I am always open to the fact that I can be wrong on any given issue.... yet there are very few liberals that would entertain the thought they might be wrong and reject the truth because it does not fit with how they feel.

In Mac's case, it appears that opposing points of views just aren't tolerated at all.

So... we run away.

I'm starting to think that if leftists don't care for this place, then I plain don't give a shit.

Ah... I see. Dick Cheney is as bad as Kim Jong Il because Cheney did... what exactly?

This is the sort of moral relativism I've come to expect by the left - especially the far-left, which, as a self-confessed socialist, would fit you perfectly Mac.

And as soon as someone effectively challenges a committed leftist they do what all leftists do, they pick up their blocks and stomp out.

So I cannot honestly say I am surprised at your announcement.

But honestly Mac, to call Carter "classy" for extending condolences on the passing of a brutal, murdering, animal like Kim is just flat out wrong.

There can be no justification for a former President doing such a thing.

As Tex asked before, would you have called Truman a "classy guy" had he offered Hitlers family condolences on his passing?

Snicker Well DUH! Of course only left-wing dissent is valid!

Just look at how the MSM treated the truly spontaneous Tea Party movement vs. the Occutard movement.

Anyone still believing that the MSM are objective reporters must still believe in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and any number of other obvious fictions that real adults KNOW are fiction.

If the MSM's bias was any more obvious, even the mentally handicapped could be accused of being shills for saying they believe them.
