Liberal Nonsense Of The Day: Don’t Call Illegal Immigrants “Illegal Immigrants”

Most people find it difficult to believe that I am a big fan of George Carlin. I certainly don’t subscribe to the same ideological bent as he did, but I’ll be the first to jump to his defense and say that Carlin, though his interpretations were often different than mine, was prone to thought over feeling. He was a man who questioned why this world functioned as it did, and called out the ludicrous and arbitrary nature of much of what we had come to simply accept. He was a thinker first, and a feeler second; and that is all I ever ask.

Handicapped became physically challenged. Physically challenged became differently-abled. Retarded became mentally handicapped which became developmentally challenged. Retarded became a “no-no” word. Oriental is Asian. Black became African American for awhile, but is now black again. I’m not a Scots-Irish American. I’m white, but I should only say that in a hushed voice - white pride is racist.

Charles Garcia, the CEO of Garcia Trujillo, a business that focuses on commerce with the Hispanic market, has claimed that “illegal immigrant”, “illegal alien” or just plain “illegal” are racial slurs. He has claimed that he prefers the term, “removable alien” or”economic refugee”. I bet he does… Likewise, I’m sure Jack the Ripper preferred “unlicensed surgeon”.

In an emotional article for CNN.com, Garcia pulls out all the stops to appeal to the “feelers” of society by ripping Fox News, attempting to draw a correlation to the use of “illegal” and a frequency of “hate crimes” (a loaded term, itself), and invoking George Orwell’s 1984 to scare the masses away from “groupthink” (ironic, isn’t it?).

“Migrant workers residing unlawfully in the U.S. are not — and never have been – criminals,” Garcia began, “They are subject to deportation, through a civil administrative procedure that differs from criminal prosecution, and where judges have wide discretion to allow certain foreign nationals to remain here.”

For good measure, Garcia even tried to draw a flimsy association with the term “illegal immigrant” and the Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. Please, it’s apples and oranges. To suggest any commonality amongst the two groups is irresponsible and misleading.

To make sure the reader feels deeply for these poor, wretched souls who come here to merely aid America and contribute, Garcia even discussed Jose Gutierrez, the first combat veteran to die in the Iraq War. While I certainly appreciate Mr. Gutierrez’s sacrifice, the point is entirely missed by Garcia; those that oppose illegal immigration do not object to immigration, per se. We simply believe that the laws of this country ought to be respected and enforced. We further reject that it is racist to try to deny entry by anyone not willing to go through the legal immigration process. Furthermore, we reject that it is racist to resist changing our culture to accommodate foreign customs or languages. And we certainly reject the claim that it is racist to call an illegal immigrant, illegal.

It would be very convenient for Mr. Garcia’s agenda to divide the term, “illegal immigrant”. Not all immigrants are illegal, and the phrasing is an apt description and differentiation from those that have come here legally.

Garcia has a history with bigotry- his own. In March, Garcia showed his disdain for Americans who wish this to remain America by imitating a “redneck” accent on CNN and painting those that value the rule of law as some backwards hill-folk. But, no, we’re the bigots…

Sadly, Garcia is not alone in his stance. 46% of Latinos polled by Fox News Latino found the term, “illegal immigrant” offensive. Furthermore the Applied Research Center, a “racial justice think tank”, has launched the “Drop the I-Word Campaign”. The think tank contends that, “['Illegal'] is a racially charged slur used to dehumanize and discriminate against immigrants and people of color regardless of migratory status.” Oddly enough, the think tank, concerned about the labels society applies to people, has not yet questioned why every person of European ancestry is “white”, regardless of ethnic origin.

We can no longer humor these activists that spread their agendas by attacking our perspectives of problems in this world on the most fundamental of levels: the language that we use. By restricting our language and guiding us into convenient terms for the leftist ideology, these patient propagandists do not confront our core principles head-on, they simply change us little by little until we are more susceptible to adopting what would have once been thought of as ridiculous.

Think I’m overreacting? Think of all the pleasant-sounding, yet ridiculous issues affecting our lives today. For instance, take the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. That sounds harmless enough. It’s food stamps, and 1 in 7 are on them. We will spend $82 billion on them this year. But, “Nutrition Assistance” sounds nice, right?

This threat to the language we use is the instrument of gradual coercion. Gradualism leads the world, one step at a time, down the path to a politically correct world where no conversations of substance can be had. If we allow ourselves to be divided on such absurd labels and arbitrary issues, we can never get to the heart of matters. Beyond simply annoying, so frequently changing the language we use to communicate, obstructs our abilities on the most basic level to relate ideas and progress as a society. Illegal immigration, or whatever the left is calling it this week, is an issue that demands attention. Digressing the conversation to labels is a tactic to avoid the central issue, and that can’t happen.

Ugh. You can't even tell it like it is.
