4. The Seeker by The Who
5. Mr. Soul by Buffalo Springfield

A Show of Hands
Different Stages
Rush in Rio (you should have that with the dvd)
R30: 30th Anniversary World Tour (cd & dvd)
Snakes & Arrows Live

Okay, now for a little commentary... First and foremost, I'm a pop fan. I always have been and I always will be. Hence my forum name. But I'm also a music fan and as such, I've also got a bit of country in my collection, some classical and now I'm venturing into jazz. As of now, my jazz knowledge is almost zero, but I'd like to think I know enough to know to begin with Coltrane and Davis. So hopefully I will enjoy these and become more familiar with the genre.
I have been a huge jazz fan since my early teens - it is my favorite genre (though I like music from just about any genre).
I have to say that you have selected two excellent artists Coltrane and Davis are awesome. I have tons of their stuff. You'll have to let me know how you like them!

Re: What's the last cd you bought?
Yeah, even though I'm a jazz-newbie, I'd like to think I've always been enough of music fan to know about "the greats" regardless of genre. So I already knew of Coltrane and Davis. The catch was convincing myself that I actually wanted to learn more about them and the genre in general (i.e. spend the money on them). I'm happy I did though. After a little research on both, it wasn't difficult figuring out what CD's to start with... And I must say this too, as I listened to the CD's, I was already familiar with one or two things. That says a lot about their importance to music. And hey, I'm actually enjoying the music too.dblboggie wrote:I have been a huge jazz fan since my early teens - it is my favorite genre (though I like music from just about any genre).

You are right on the money with that observation! They are indeed two very important jazz artists. Good to hear that you're enjoying them!
If you like those two artists, you might also enjoy the likes of Milt Jackson, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson, Wes Montgomery and even Dave Brubeck. So many great artists, so little time.

The new Whitesnake sounds almost like Slide It In (from 1984). Not quite as cheesy as their stuff got in the late 80's. Listening to it as I type. I like it.

I made it to the bookstore today and after browsing, I was caught between Grand Funk Railroad (do I really need another version of "The Locomotion"?) and Genesis. Basically it came down to a live version of one song versus about half of another CD, which I hadn't heard. I have "Genesis" and "Abacab" and of course, I'm familiar with their late-70's and later stuff. But I don't know anything about them before 1977, so I decided on that one.

I think you'd really like the DVD. The 3rd disc is about 2 hours of documentary on them getting ready for the tour, rehearsals to the tour itself. It's one of the best concert documentaries I've ever seen.

David Bowie - Best Of Bowie
Considering my current "issues", I've decided to listen to some stuff that I never "quite" got around to (i.e. Bowie, Velvet Underground) when I was younger. Anyway, why not? Now I just have to figure out where to go next? 60's Pink Floyd? John Denver??? More classical?

Speed metal!
Seriously, if you like progressive metal with a very hard edge, check out Opeth. The singer has a pretty good voice but then he changes it into the death metal growl at certain points of the song. They actually have an acoustic type CD. The rest of their catalog is heavy. I'll post one of my favorite songs by them below.

It's funny. A few nights ago (as I've done every night recently - and by "night", it always goes well into the morning), I saw that I actually had some stuff I'd never even listened to, or can't remember doing it. The one in question was Keith Urban. I was like, "I have country?" So being moody, I listened to it. And decided within about thirty seconds that it was not country. Not even that, but it could have come out in the mid-70's and been up there with stuff like the Eagles and Boston. I then proceeded to listen to the whole thing in one shot. It's funny how that works sometimes.

I think you'd like most of their stuff if you can get past the death metal growl. The singers growl isn't like the typical death metal band though. But I really like the music. It's Dream Theater or Symphony X on steroids.

Yeah, today's country is nothing but rock. It sickens me that that genre of music has been hijacked. I like early 90s country and all of George Strait's stuff (believe it or not).

Bad Company - Live At Wembley
When legendary classic rockers Bad Company performed at the Wembley Arena in London on an April 2010 spring night, high-definition cameras captured the whole evening in all its glory.
There is three original Bad Company members - vocalist Paul Rodgers, guitarist Mick Ralphs and drummer Simon Kirke. Original bassist Boz Burrell died of a heart attack in 2006. They are augmented by bassist Lynn Sorensen (bassist for Paul Rodgers solo band) and guitarist Howard Leese (former lead guitarist for the band, Heart).
The set list is packed with every major hit, fan favorites and seldom-heard deep album cuts. The DVD and Blu-Ray includes a band interview.
Bad Company burst upon the rock'n'roll scene in 1973, and was immediately dubbed a super-group by fans and press alike, as its members all came from very successful popular bands: Free (Rodgers and Kirke), Mott The Hoople (Ralphs) and King Crimson (Burrell). They lived up to the hype for nine straight years with a string of six soulful hard-rocking albums. After a break they reformed in 1999.
