Madison — Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch have both been threatened, sources in the Capitol said Wednesday.

A spokesman for Walker referred questions to his security detail, which is handled by the Capitol Police and State Patrol. But three sources familiar with the matter said a threat had been made against the state's top elected officials, saying the threat was made in an Internet posting.

In addition, two Wisconsin state senators have received a threat. The threats come just days after the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz.

The FBI, Capitol Police and local law enforcement were taking undisclosed steps to address "a threat that has been made against various Wisconsin public officials, including two state senators," according to a memo sent to senators Wednesday by Senate Chief Clerk Rob Marchant. The memo also suggested that senators consider monitoring Internet postings being made about them.

Marchant declined to name the two senators who were threatened or otherwise comment, referring questions to law enforcement.

A separate but almost identical memo sent to Assembly members Wednesday by Assembly Chief Clerk Patrick Fuller mentioned the threat against the two senators. But it made no mention of a threat against any Assembly members.

It wasn't clear if there was one threat against multiple officials or a series of individual threats. Also unclear was when the threats occurred or were discovered, but the lieutenant governor's husband, Rep. Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc), said he learned of them Wednesday.

"Becky and I always have and always will continue to be, to the utmost level, careful of security," he said. "My home is protected by a security system and a gun."

A police officer was stationed outside the door of the lieutenant governor's Capitol office Wednesday. Walker travels with a security detail, as have governors before him.

Capitol Police spokeswoman Carla Vigue confirmed Capitol Police, the FBI and local law enforcement were investigating the threats, but declined further comment.

State Patrol Superintendent David Collins, the FBI and Madison police declined comment.
