What's the deal with this? When did it become illegal to speak out about something you don't like? Isn't that called "freedom of speech"

Obviously you haven't been in the military. Or have you?
The general can't be critical of Obama or the VP. Obama is his commander in chief. I think Bama is a lousy president but he's still the general's boss. Now, if the general retires and blasts away at Obama, there's nothing that can be done about that.
There is no freedom of speech in the military as we know it.

I agree. This must be an exception to free speech. Armed forces cannot be a democratic process.

There's a reason why civilians command the military here. Otherwise we'd be looking like Venezuela.
