Buys his daughter a £1,000,000 flat in central London. Tony Blair - Labour leader - champion of the working man.

Blair home number nine: £1m house for student daughter

It is every parent’s desire to give their children the best start in life, but few would ever aspire to buying them a £1million house as a leaving home present. Unless, that is, you happen to be as wealthy as Tony and Cherie Blair.

Kathryn Blair, seen here with her father, will never have to worry about mortgage payments as long as she lives in the house.

The former prime minister and his wife have paid £975,000 in cash for a maisonette in west London for their 22-year-old daughter Kathryn, bringing the family property portfolio to nine homes.
Land Registry documents show that the three-bedroom property, which has two bathrooms, a garage and its own lift, was bought on July 23 in the names of Cherie Blair and Kathryn Blair.

It means the Blairs’ only daughter, who is studying law, will never have to worry about mortgage payments as long as she lives in the apartment, which is within walking distance of her parents’ home in Connaught Square.

Since leaving office, Mr Blair is reputed to have earned upwards of £20 million from public speaking engagements and as an adviser to foreign governments.

The Blairs’ latest purchase will serve to intensify scrutiny of how the former prime minister has managed to amass such a fortune in the space of three years since leaving Downing Street.

The family own properties worth a total of £15 million comprising their £3.7 million home in central London and an £800,000 mews house attached, a £5.75 million country home in Buckinghamshire, Mr Blair’s old constituency home in County Durham, flats in Bristol and Strasbourg, and London homes for each of their three eldest children. Nicky Blair, 24, who works as a sports agent, co-owns a £1.13 million town house in London with his mother.

Euan Blair, 26, who works for the investment bank Morgan Stanley, recently sold his £500,000 flat in London to buy a £1.3million house, also with his mother.

A source close to the Blairs said: “Cherie, as usual, has been the driving force behind this. She wants all the children to have a firm platform to be successful in their chosen careers, and that includes not having to worry about being able to afford a home. I think they are long past the stage of worrying how this might all look to other people.”
Kathryn Blair, a student at King’s College London, spent the past year in Strasbourg on an Erasmus exchange scheme, where she lived in a £250,000 flat bought by her parents.

She is expected to move into her new home in London within weeks following refurbishment and redecoration work.

Seriously, why did Tony Blair ever join The Labour Party? The term "champagne socialist" applies now more than ever. I mean seriously, what comparison is there between him and Kinnock, or for that matter, his predecessor John Smith?! If only Smith had lived to win the 1997 election for Labour I hear myself saying...

The idea that everybody should go to university would never have been supported by any of the main three parties... Lib-Dem at a push but even then I could never have seen them supporting that.

It comes down to privilege. I think it gets to the point that it doesn't matter what they stood for politically but more with elitism.

And the fact that social mobility (and financial divisions between the classes) decreased under Labour makes a mockery of what they were supposed to stand for.

I've just heard an interview with Tony Benn on Radio 4. To say that he was no fan of Tony Blair and New Labour would be understatement of the year.

Princess Tony, or Saint Tony as he would probably like to be called is obsesses with himself and nothing else. He used being PM a method of self promotion. He was never interested in what was best for Britain, foreign politics was his thing - all the exciting stuff like war and schmoozing with George Bush. He was happy to plunge Britain into appalling debt, passing populist policies so long as HE stayed in power and was able to promote himself as Tony Blair - international man of politics, fighter of tyranny, diplomat and all round good egg. Well that back fired spectacularly. President of Europe? Ha.Ha.Ha. That lying little shit deserves to be in prison.

I do. Between them they all seemed to think they were on some sort of holy mission and that they themselves could do no wrong.

It is also the falseness of Tony Blair that irritates me. An apparent Socialist who is a multi millionaire? Former Labour leaders like Neil Kinnock and Michael Foote would never have gone down his route of champagne socialism and I'm sure Michael Foote is spinning in his freshly dug grave.

I don't think Tony Blair was as stoopid as George Bush, who is AFAICT a complete twit, I think he's deluded, blinded by his own over inflated sense of self importance....

Oh noo! I feel a rant coming on!

I should create a section just for Bush bashing. ROFL

Personally, i don't think he was dumb. If he was, then Democrats/liberals were even dumber for being taken for a ride for 8 years. Very Happy

I will say though, that he had some horseshit advisers.... just like Obama has. Really bad and delusional.

I see this sometimes - that some people don't think Bush was as stoopid as he looked. I can almost believe that because I don't think anyone could really be as stoopid as he looked. Even Christopher Hitchens says that Bush wasn't as dumb as some people like to imply and that he was just an horrific public speaker. I just...I don't...really? I always viewed him...well...like this:

Naughty British satirists for warping my fragile little mind!

I saw some guy who reports for NBC, at the White House, over here on a late night show (Tonight Show) and Leno asked him what Bush was really like. He said he wasn't as dumb as people made him out to be. Very engaged person.

He was a lousy speaker. But then have you listened to Obama without a teleprompter? He's almost as bad.

Bush wasn't the same man when he became president as he was when he was governor of Texas. It was like two different people.
